WHERE
DO GORILLAS LIVE?
One of the disturbing
questions encountered by most humans is generally about the lives of their own
relatives, the Mountain Gorillas. Gorillas are lovely and social animals that
usually form harems of which can be compared to groups or families.
These precious
creatures are so much endangered, and can only be traced within East Africa (the
Virunga region). Of the three subspecies of gorilla, the mountain gorilla is the largest and rarest. Remarkably strong, the
mountain gorilla has a short trunk and a broad chest and shoulders. Males
develop a streak of silver hair on their backs when they mature and are called
"silver backs."
Gorillas in the pearl
of Africa (Uganda) can be seen in only 2 national parks, that is, Bwindi
Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga Gorilla National park. Though Gorillas
can be traced in the DRC, it is only in Uganda and Rwanda where Mountain
Gorillas can be trekked.
Their presence in
Uganda and Rwanda constitutes a rise in Gorilla safari activities with more
tours and excursions made in Africa for tracking safaris and habituation experiences
to learn about and explore these gentle giants.
For a person who has
not read about African mountain gorillas nor has information about them, a
buzzing and most striking question is how
gorillas live, interact with each other and their behaviors.
Uganda has mountain
gorillas which also take on a name scientifically called beringei. These have occasionally been a fancy for a Uganda gorilla Safari and gorilla tours in Rwanda.
Where there are the
strong silverbacks, you will find
others a few meters or closely near each other playing, feeding and going about
their daily activities. It’s a family system; therefore, Gorillas do not live
alone but live as a community.
The mother gorillas can
be seen around their babies, breastfeeding them or tidying them up especially
in case they have some ticks or dirt on them. The young ones stay with mother
till they are around 5 years old.
Mountain gorillas are
a fancy since they live for up to 53 years, the reason to why their life
expectancy is high if not endangered by human beings, diseases, bad weather
like earth quake, and other calamities that tend to cut their lives short.
Gorillas are often
closely related and compared to man due to their ability to succumb to human
lifestyle, and as a result they are usually used for entertainment in zoos and
theaters.
They are exclusively
intelligent and have a high intellectual capacity to sense what is good and bad
for themselves. They react according to the sense and instinct about that which
seems to threaten their wellbeing.
When you think of trekking
gorillas in Africa, the Virunga region should be the highlight of your safari;
and take a lifetime steep to explore Africa’s impenetrable national park,
Bwindi, Mgahinga Gorilla national park, and Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park.
